Kaat Van Assche, KUL’s new FAROS PhD student, won the prize for the 2nd best Flemish Engineering Technology master thesis of 2021-2022 at the ie-net awards. Her work focused on bio-impedance based motion compensation and more details about her topic are nicely introduced in the following video.

This video presents work lead by Christopher E. Mower. The ROS-PyBullet Interface is a framework between the reliable contact simulator PyBullet and the Robot Operating System (ROS) with additional utilities for Human-Robot Interaction in the simulated environment. This work will be presented at the Conference on Robot Learning (CoRL), 2022.

Are you expert (PhD) in surgical robotics, sensor fusion or control and are you looking for a postdoctoral position in surgical robotics? Look no further! Within the Robot-Assisted Surgery (RAS) group at KU Leuven, Belgium, we are looking for someone to take on a leading role in the FAROS project and push forwards robotic spine surgery. You will also be able to contribute to other clinical fields in which our group is active!

We are happy to announce that the midterm review on the 12th of September 2022 was completed successfully. After a full integration week, where all the partner universities collaborated intensely to prepare for the demonstrations, we were very excited to present our progress to the three expert reviewers as well as to our EU project officer.

We are pleased to announce that the midterm review of the FAROS project will be held on September 12th at KU Leuven.

All partners have been closely collaborating in order to prepare for the review during this week’s integration week.

This PhD project aims at developing a vibro-acoustic method to detect imminent bone breach during robotic pedicle screw placement.

Vibro-acoustics is one key non-visual sensing method, using vibrational and acoustic information. Vibro-acoustics already has shown its merits in the assessment of fixation of orthopaedic and dental implants. Moreover, it will be investigated whether vibro-acoustic data can predict the quality of the bone tissue, predicting the possible fixation of pedicle screws. To this end, different probabilistic models can be derived each with their own predictive power. The validity and predictive power of the most promising models will be verified experimentally. Sensor fusion can be applied to elevate the confidence, accuracy and robustness of the parameter estimates.

The consortium had a fantastic and highly productive time working at the labs of Balgrist Campus AG and the operating room at Balgrist University Hospital this week.

We indeed had the opportunity to run a new consortium-wide integration week together with FAROS engineers, scientists and clinicians.
